Obituary for Karl Struss

Karl George Struss, 82, of Berea died peacefully Friday, March 24, 2017, at home following a long illness. He was born in Wakeeney, Kansas, on September 24, 1934, to the late Harry and Lorene Mudd Struss. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Ina (Griffith) Struss.

He was the beloved father of and survived by 5 children, Amy (Derwood) Basham, Karla (Thomas) Wallace, Rebecca (The Late Robert) Banks, Richard (Jo) Struss, and John Struss; six grandchildren, Josh Dargavell, Lindsey (Matt) Thomas, Katie Dargavell, Rachel Wallace, Kenny Struss, and Cory Wallace. He is also survived by one brother, Paul (Barbara) Struss and three sisters; Rita Baker, Maryann (The Late Dale) Toms, and Glenda (Marcus) Keyes. Also, survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris (The Late James) Russo, and Kay Swearingen; along with many nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Oregon State College with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting (Class of 1956) and served as President of Sigma Pi Omega chapter. His first job was at Montgomery Ward in Chicago, Illinois. He then accepted a position with Hyster Company in Portland, Oregon, moving to Berea in 1976, and retiring in 1985. He accepted a position with Berea College as Internal Auditor in 1986 and retired from the college, in 1999.

After retiring, he frequented Berea Coffee and Tea, Lee's Famous Recipe, as well as, Senior ‘Bored' meetings at McDonald's. He enjoyed classical music, gardening, woodworking, and was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. Go Cubbies!!!

Karl was an avid walker and never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with a smile and never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was fortunate enough to have the same neighbors on Walnut Street for 40 years, and thoroughly enjoyed their friendship. His family knew him as a very gentle, generous, and kind soul who always put them first. He will be missed by anyone who knew him but is happily reunited with his wife and those who went before him. Per his request, he will be cremated and a private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree or take a long walk in his remembrance.

'Worry no more… We are in His hands.'
