Obituary for Anita Hurst Barker

Anita Lynn Hurst Barker, 82, passed away suddenly in her home in Berea, Kentucky on November 2, 2017. Anita was born to Lillian Isaacs Hurst and Nelson Stephen Hurst at the height of the Great Depression. She spent the first years of her life on a small farm having solo-adventures that her parents all too often only learned about years later.

Anita received her B.A. in Public School Music from Berea College in 1958 where she earned membership in Phi Kappa Phi. While teaching music for three years at Silver Creek Elementary School, Anita earned an M.A. in counseling and testing from Eastern Kentucky University and joined the faculty of Berea College as Associate Director of Counseling and Testing. Over the following thirty six years, she rose to the positions of Director of Counseling Services, became Associate Dean for Student Development and Counseling and at the time of her retirement was Director of Counseling and Wellness Services. The honors that meant most to her from her years with Berea were being elected Woman of the Year by the student body, receiving the Student Association Appreciation Award and her association with the New Opportunity School for Women.

She loved travel, classical music, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Agatha Christie novels, chocolate, and heavily buttered toast. She will be missed by her children, Jerry Fish, Melanie Fish and Steve Robinson, her grandson Chuck McIntyre, the members of her extended family, whether acquired by blood or marriage, and the thousands of students she counseled, mothered, nurtured, and cajoled through to the next stage of their lives over three and a half decades at Berea. From her exuberant childhood, through decades spent navigating life and career with serene disregard for the constraints and conventions of a world built by men, her years as primary caregiver for her mother, and even through the chronic pain and physical decline of her final years, she lived her life the same way she contemplated the prospect of the next one: fearlessly.

In accordance with wishes, her remains were cremated. Visitation will be at Reppert Funeral Home at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 11, 2017 with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 pm. Her children ask that donations in lieu of flowers be directed to the New Opportunity School for Women at Berea College, the Salvation Army, or the First Christian Church in Berea.
